What do you need to do Pilates?

When it comes to Pilates - there are multiple props and things your can use to make your workout interesting, more effective and challenging. And I get a lot of comment that people don´t do Pilates because they thing is boring don´t have a resistance band, weights, nice sportswear. The truth that in order to start loving and enjoying Pilates classes you only need one thing.

The first thing that you need no matter what your level is, is a good Pilates Instructor - online or in a group on site class. A good Pilates teacher will give you the fundamentals if you are a beginner, and a good Pilates teacher will challenge you if you are a advanced mover. It doesn´t matter what activewear you use, what mat your have or where you practice. It all comes to your Pilates teacher. There is one rule not to miss out - your Pilates teacher has to be certified. Experience is also very important but if a teacher doesn´t have much experience it does not mean he/she is not good. Make sure you feel there is trust between your and your instructor, she/he has to correct you in class, do a follow up, check on progress.

The second thing you need is dedication and persistence. I know this is the hardest. We all know that feeling when you really don´t want to do something, but its great once you are doing it. We have to set small goals and commit to them. You will only start seeing results if you stay committed to your practice. This is where the transformation takes place, we have talked about

Good Pilates teacher and persistence are the basic condiments to bake a good Pilates practice. Of course in order to feel completely comfortable you get a good mat, quality activewear and add some props to your daily practice. It motivates me when I put on a new Pilates pants or I use a new thick and fluffy mat to protect my spine. Often I don´t have with me a mat or the most appropriate sportswear and I don´t use that as an excuse. I know I can still go through my routine. You have to know yourself and if bringing always a mat and comfy clothes if this will get you moving.

From more practical point there are multiple things that you can use in order to do Pilates, no matter where you are. I travel a lot and not always can bring the best mat with me - then I just use a towel or a carpet. When I don´t have much space - I think of exercises that are doable in the small space I have or I do standing Pilates. When I don´t have weights - I focus more on resistance and bodyweight, slow and controlled movements. If I get inspired - I can grab a chair, or use the wall as a prop. There are endless options, if you have the dedication. Sometimes I bring with me my small Pilates ball which I inflate when I have to use. I also bring a loop resistance band that also doesn´t take much space.
